The mangosteen fruit tree is part of a classified as one of the Guttiferae, which is a family of mostly tropical trees and shrubs that produce a form of acrid yellow resinous juice. There is a virtual lack of information on the mangosteen fruit tree, despite of its reputation, and no one even knows precisely for sure where and when the mangosteen fruit tree was first cultivated. Nevertheless, it is powerfully believed that it first originated in the Moluccas, while some connoisseurs say that the mangosteen fruit trees were first cultivated in Thailand or Burma. For many years now, the fruit of the mangosteen fruit tree has been shipped from Singapore to Calcutta, then on even to China, for medical reasons.
